A suspect was arrested Monday in the brutal Brooklyn stabbing deaths of his girlfriend and her 91-year-old stepfather — after telling the woman who found the bodies, “You know what happened,” a police source said.
Kerry Lewis, 46, is charged with murder and weapon possession. He has three prior arrests on his record, the police source said.
The victims, Roosevelt “Bubba” Simmons and 66-year-old Jacqueline “Jackie” Delyons, were found dead with their necks slashed in a Cypress Hills house on Warwick St. near Arlington Ave.
Their bodies were found on the kitchen floor about 3:45 p.m. on Sunday by a 61-year-old woman who stopped by for a visit.
After making the shocking discovery, the visitor saw Lewis, who also lives in the house, in the hallway and asked him what happened, the police source said.
“You know what happened,” he chillingly told her, according to the source. He was taken into custody by police for questioning and was later charged with the slays.
Ramon Berghout, an ex-boyfriend who shared a son with Delyons, said she was a religious person who was always helping friends and family.
“My son had left the house yesterday and before the incident happened she was writing down some Scriptures with her brother at a prayer line,” Berghout said. “That was her thing. She was very into the Bible, very religious.”
He said Delyons and her stepdad will be missed.
“Bubba was a sweet old country guy, watching sports,” Berghout said. “I’d come over and visit sometimes and we’d talk. He’d be outside sitting down and just greeting people. He would walk the dog, too.”
“I’m just wrapping my head around this,” he added. “They’re all sweet people.”
Family friend Daryl Moorer called the older victim “a great person.”
“Nobody expected this,” he said. “This is only stuff you see on TV and in the movies.”
He said the suspect wasn’t a bad person.
“You never know what people going through,” he said.
Simmons’ grandson Eric Brooks said Delyons was Simmons’ caregiver.
“We’re all at a loss for words.” he said. “We have no idea.”
Neighbor Emily Rannarase remembered Delyons as a “nice lady” who would buy food to feed stray cats.
“it’s so sad,” she said. “Every day we pass by the house we would see the old man and he would say, ‘Hi.’ ”
Another neighbor, Hubert Walcott, said neither victim ever bothered anyone, and that such violence is not common in the area.
“We get more trouble from the train going by than from people,” he said.
Lewis’ arraignment was pending in Brooklyn Criminal Court on Monday.
